What is 3D Cone Beam Radiography?

Radiography has been dentistry's window into the invisible for over a century, but for most of that history the window showed a compressed world: three dimensional anatomy flattened into two dimensional film, with everything in the beam's path stacked into a single overlapping image. Cone beam computed tomography, CBCT, removed the compression. It gives clinicians the tooth as it actually exists, in three dimensions, at resolutions fine enough to trace individual canals.


The technology takes its name from its geometry. A cone shaped X ray beam and a digital detector rotate around the patient's head in one brief pass, capturing hundreds of projection images. Reconstruction software converts those projections into a volumetric data set, a true 3D model that can be sliced in any plane, rotated to any angle, and measured to fractions of a millimeter. Compared with medical CT, dental CBCT achieves this with focused fields of view and substantially lower radiation doses.
